Description
In the late 30 of the 20th century were built several viewpoints in the Parque Florestal de Monsanto1 from old deactivated structures, one of which is the Viewpoint of Moinhos do Mocho that took two windmills to rise its observatory.
Using the car parking of the Viewpoint of Luneta dos Quartéis as starting point, we descend a small stone stairway on the south side and follow a trail of green from trees until the viewpoint.
Waiting for us are two very old windmills used to supply flour to the city of Lisbon in the end of the 18th century, and a modest garden involving them. The passage of the years inflicts some dismay to the very degraded windmills. The big surprise is that the landscape is gone due to the forest growth, there's nearly nothing to be seen excepting for trees, bushes and plants. The panoramic that nowadays is kept away from sight by branches and leaves should comprise the whole south slope of Serra de Monsanto until the margins of the Rio Tejo2, crossing part of the Ajuda parish.
Around here appear various forest trails chosen by enthusiasts of open air jogging, cyclists or, simply, forest lovers. There are some wooden benches allowing relaxation while listening to the sound of birds or appreciate peaceful and revitalizing moments of the sierra's pure air.
