Description
We go up to the North side of the Parque Florestal de Monsanto1, through Estrada de Monsanto2 to the diversion that leads us right to the Viewpoint of Luneta dos Quartéis.
During the late nineteenth century, in order to protect Lisbon from possible attacks, various military structures were built in the Serra do Monsanto3, located on the highest point of the city. This viewpoint represents on those adapted and converted places for civilian use on the twentieth century, between the and .
A huge clearing among the pine trees, gives way to a paved area used as a parking lot, consisting of an old restaurant’s remains and the viewpoint’s wall to our right.
On the same day we write this description, we acknowledge that this space is in urgent need of urban intervention. This place seems somewhat abandoned, where we can see vandalized areas and feel a little bit unsafe.
The perspective of this viewpoint focuses almost exclusively to the town of Alfragide, Amadora’s county, and its adjacent towns. Above all, we see the large shopping centres and the suburban residential areas of Lisbon.
It’s not an observation area of Portugal’s capital at all.
