Description
Presenting us with the most comprehensive view of Lisbon is the Viewpoint of Castelo de São Jorge emerging from the heart of Castelo de São Jorge1 at the top of Colina do Castelo2.
And if we make our way up to the Castle towers, we get ourselves a spectacular view of the city to 360 degrees, a pleasant result of this Hill’s disposition in relation to all the others; higher, centred and isolated.
Sheltered by the pines’ cold shade, the Viewpoint is located outside of the castle’s fort; while still within the walls that surround it, parallel to Rua Costa do Castelo3. In straight angle, two sidewalks with perpendicular fronts are formed: one facing west to the Ponte 25 de Abril14 and another south oriented towards Almada and Baía do Seixal13
From the Tejo4 unto the ends of the outskirts of Lisbon, the West sidewalk’s perspective brightly widens up, however, the noticeable area doesn’t go beyond Parque Eduardo VII5 and Praça do Areeiro6. We’re just opposite the Elevador de Santa Justa7, Convento do Carmo8, Praça da Figueir9 e Baixa Pombalina10. This is where we clearly realize that Lisbon sits on a very wide area, slightly declined over the river.
We go around the viewpoint and head towards the South sidewalk, closer to Rio Tejo11 and to the other bank, making our way through the deformed and bumpy pavement. The Colina de São Vicente12 hides on the Eastside.
