The House Museum Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves was built in with the purpose of becoming the residence and working space of the prestigious painter José Malhoa, having been named Casa Malhoa. This building, designed by Norte Júnior, was awarded with the Prémio Valmor that aims the excellence of the architectonic quality. Currently, it is considered a Building of Public Interest.
In , António Anastácio Gonçalves, doctor and collector, acquired the Casa Malhoa to live in it and to store his collection mainly composed of Chinese porcelains, Portuguese and international furniture and Portuguese paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. There are also pieces once belonging to the collection of the painter Silva Porto.
In the year , four years after the death of Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves, the Casa Malhoa together with his collection become a possession of the Portuguese State. It is fulfilled the wish of the deceased to bequeath it to the people so that one day it could come to enjoy a museum that was yet to materialize. In , the House Museum Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves opens doors to all those who desire to visit and witness a collection with nearly 3.000 works of art.
