Viewpoint Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen

The Viewpoint Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen presents one of the most gorgeous and cozy outdoor terraces of Lisbon.

Situated at the Colina de Santo André¹, in front of Jardim Augusto Gil², the Convento da Graça³, forms a small nook for the whole city, where grows a row of pine trees leaning to the landscape. The space is commercially exploited by a small kiosk that conveniently serves its visitors.

The landscape is really superb! Here we are neighbors of the Castelo de São Jorge⁴ highlighted on top of Colina do Castelo⁵, immediately to the left. It is also sighted part of Ponte 25 de Abril⁶, far away.

On the opposite side of this viewpoint, we can see the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara⁷ representing the Colina de São Roque⁸. Closer to us, but less noticeable due to the construction that hides its shape, we have the Colina de Sant'Ana⁹.

The urban area that descends the Colina do Castelo⁵ belongs to the Bairro Histórico da Mouraria¹⁰, so-called for having been the place destined for the Moorish occupation, after their expulsion from the castle, during the conquest of Lisbon by Dom Afonso Henriques in 1147.

The majority of the urban area erected in front of us, from the Rio Tejo¹¹ until the Colina de Sant'Ana, is from the time of Marquis of Pombal's governation that, after the Earthquake of 1755, decided to rebuild Lisbon according to his orders.
