Review
The Santo António Museum (named Museu Antoniano until ) was created with the purpose of paying respect to Santo António, Patron of Lisboa. Theologian of great importance to the Christian religion, lived between the late 12th century and early 13th century. Little while after his death, the catholic church approved the canonization and António became a Saint.
Located at Largo de Santo António da Sé, the museum lies near to the church that is considered to be the dwelling of the saint's parents. Currently, it is one of the centers of the Museu de Lisboa.
The museum opened to the public in the sixties of the last century and was rehabilitated and reopened in . It has presently in its permanent exhibition about 150 pieces in show that include sculptures, paintings, printings or ceramics. The highlight goes to the tile panel allusive to Santo António's sermon to the fishes, dated from the 17th century.
In this modernized space, one might also listen to the voices of Maria Bethânia and Carminho (a Fado singer) reading texts about about the miracles performed by the saint and view images and videos related to the popular festivities that take place annually in Lisbon on the in honor of Santo António.
