Review
The Atelier-Museum Júlio Pomar was created with the purpose of divulging the work of the painter Júlio Pomar. It opened on the , and is housed in an old warehouse dated from the 17th century that was used by the painter as an atelier until . Located in one of the numerous alleys of Lisbon, visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the cultural richness of this space.
The architectural design of the atelier-museum belongs to Álvaro Siza Vieira, one of the most relevant contemporary architects in Portugal.
Júlio Pomar was, besides an artist, a political activist that through his neorealist works - with a critical inclination to harsh social reality of those times - contested the dictatorial regime of the Estado Novo1.
In the collection of the atelier-museum exist nearly 400 pieces which are the result of altruistic donations from the painter to the Fundação Júlio Pomar2.
In permanent exhibition, are disclosed pieces of art from different artistic areas since painting, engraving, ceramics, sculpture, collages and drawing, exposing the versatility of a remarkable artist. There's still an important documental collection that can be consulted by those who wish for it.
In the facilities of the atelier-museum occur temporary exhibitions and exists a small auditorium with 60 seats to assist making various types of events.
